Police in Western Province investigate serious road accident

A vehicle driver is assisting the Police in Gizo in the Western Province following an accident involving a man in his 20’s who was injured while trying to get onto the back of a 3-ton truck in the township on 25 October 2017.

It was alleged the man ran behind the moving vehicle and held onto the right side trailer, and attempted to jump onto the back of the vehicle trailer. However, he was unable to get onto the vehicle and fell. His right leg went under the right rear tyre of the vehicle and injured his leg.

The injured man is expected to be referred to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara.

“This was an unfortunate accident and is a reminder to all drivers to take all precaution and pay attention to other road users and members of the public. Equally important is that all pedestrians should never try, under any circumstances, to hop onto any moving vehicle,” says Operation Manager at the Gizo Police Station, Superintendent Vincent Eria.

Superintendent Eria adds: “Pedestrians who want to get onto any moving vehicle must get the attention of the driver. The driver has to stop before the pedestrian can get on. The pedestrian must also ensure they are standing at a safe location on the road while trying to get the attention of the driver of a vehicle to stop.”

Police in Gizo are continuing their investigation into the matter.
