Man arrested in Western Province for alleged Liquor and Assault offences

A 38-year-old man was arrested by Police in Gizo, Western Province at KHY Shop area in Gizo Township on 26 December 2017.

The man has been on the run for alleged allegations of Restriction on making liquor, going arm in public place, intimidation and common assault.

It was alleged that the man was brewing liquor locally known in the Solomon Islands as home brew, threatened people and attacked a man on the 25 December 2017 at Supato Village Vella vella, in the Western Province.

Police was alerted through information that the wanted man was sighted in the KHY Shop area in Gizo which resulted to a successful arrest.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “I am pleased with the support of the public in Gizo especially the village leaders involved in the Crime Prevention Committees (CPC) with the information of whereabouts the wanted man and I must acknowledged the cooperation rendered by CPC and as well my officers involved in the successful arrest.”

PPC Lenialu adds, “The police will continue to work together with members of public, community leaders, churches, youths and women’s group for a safer community in the Western Province.”

“Making liquor without authorisation from the Minister responsible for Licensing is against the law. It carries a custodial penalty of three years or fine of four thousand dollars; or both such imprisonment and fine,” says Chief Superintendent Lenialu.

The man is being remanded in custody by Gizo Magistrate Court until the 10 January 2018.
