24-year-old man sentenced to over 2 years in prison for stealing

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison after being found guilty in the Honiara Central Magistrates Court on 23 July 2018 for stealing.

The young man was convicted on charges of house breaking and committing felony contrary to Section 300 (a) of the Penal Code for which he was sentenced for two years in prison and a further nine months for a count of simple Larceny contrary to Section 261 (1) of the Penal Code. Both sentences are to run concurrently which means he will serve two years and nine months in prison.

Villages in Russell Islands set up rules to prevent crime in their communities

Somata Village in the Russell Islands, Central Province has become the latest village on the Island to set up rules to prevent crime from happening in their community.

The Somata Village rules were launched during an awareness talk at Somata Village conducted by police officers from Yandina Police Station on 22 July 2018.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Central Province Superintendent Patricia Leta says, “The Village Chiefs and Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) Members of Somata village came up with their Village rules.”

RSIPF warn communities of bomb blasting in Alligator Creek

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team will conduct a live demolition of bombs at Hells Point, in the Alligator Creek East of Honiara on Friday 27July 2018.

Officer In-charge (OIC) of EOD, Inspector Clifford Tunuki says, “The Hells Point Demolition Range in Central Guadalcanal area will be active from 8am to 2pm on 27 July 2018.”

Police investigate finding of dead human foetus at Ranadi rubbish dump

Police at the Naha Police Station in East Honiara are investigating a dead human foetus (unborn baby) found at the Ranadi Rubbish Dump in East Honiara on Sunday 22 July 2018.

“The unborn male human foetus was discovered at the rubbish dump by a woman who was collecting waste food for her pigs soon after a Honiara City Council Wrings driver dropped off his load of rubbish on the morning of 22 July at the Ranadi Rubbish Dump,” explains Provincial Police Commander, Honiara City, Chief Superintendent Alfred Uiga.

Police investigate sudden death of 30-year-old male inmate at Gizo Correctional Centre

Police at Gizo in Western Province is investigating the sudden death of a 30-year-old male inmate at the Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI) Centre at Malakerava on 24 July 2018.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “It is alleged that the deceased complained of a chest pain but shortly after he collapsed and became unconscious.”

Police arrest 70-year-old male for the alleged rape of a 6-year-old girl

Police in the Western Province have arrested a 70-year-old man for the alleged rape of a 6-year-old girl in Niumala Village, Kohingo Island in Western Province on 19 July 2018.

The alleged suspect is a native of Samangago Village, in the Shortland Islands but was living with his brother at Niumala Village at the time of incident.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Western Province Chief Superintendent Mathias Lenialu says, “The victim in this matter is a niece of the alleged perpetrator.”

RSIPF mediate family issue in Central Province

Police officers in Central Province have successfully mediated a family issue at Tavulea Village, on Small Ngella on 23 July 2018 involving a widow and her brother in-laws.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Central Province Superintendent Patricia Leta says, “It is alleged that the issue was between a widow and her brother in-laws regarding valuable properties that needed to be handed back to the widow and her children.”

RSIPF concerned about increasing traffic offences in Honiara

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) is concerned about the increasing number of traffic offences on the roads in Honiara over the past few weeks.

“During the week from 13 to 19 July 2018, the RSIPF Traffic Department in Honiara recorded a total of 77 traffic offences compared to 56 cases during the previous week, an increase of 21 cases. This is a concern for police and should also be a concern for all road users including drivers, vehicle owners and pedestrians,” says Inspector Brian Surimalefo, Acting Director of the Traffic Department.

RSIPF rescue 8 passengers at sea after engine problem

Eight passengers whose boat experienced engine problem while travelling between Savo and Ngella in the Central Province have been successfully rescued on 19 July 2018 and are now safe.

The passengers rescued are primary and secondary school teachers of Boromole and Polomuhu Schools in Ngella.

RSIPF arrest suspect for alleged unlawful incident in Choiseul Province

Police at Taro in the Choiseul Province have arrested a 37-year-old suspect for an alleged unlawful wounding incident at Tuzu Village in South Choiseul on 17 July 2018.

The suspect has been placed in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.

Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Choiseul Province Superintendent Vincent Eria says, “The alleged unlawful wounding incident occurred at Tuzu Village, South Choiseul and was reported via satellite phone by a member of the community in that area.”
