Man charged with airside trespass following runway incident

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) successfully intercepted a security breach at Henderson International Airport, demonstrating the vigilance and professionalism of its Aviation Unit.

A male person illegally entered the airside area of the airport while intoxicated. Witnesses reported that the suspect was throwing rocks at vehicles near the eastern end of the runway.

When challenged, he jumped the airside perimeter fence and ran across the runway toward the northeast fence line. Public bystanders had gathered near the exit, effectively limiting his escape.

Three female police constables from the RSIPF Aviation Unit responded promptly using an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) recently donated by RAPPP, apprehending the suspect on the airside and transporting him to Henderson International Airport for dealings.

The suspect will face charges of trespass at an aerodrome, contrary to Section 191 of the Civil Aviation Act 2008.

The swift and professional response of the RSIPF officers was praised by the Solomon Islands Airport Corporation Limited (SIACL) and Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands (CAASI), who commended the officers’ quick action and the effective use of the RAPPP-donated ATV.

The RSIPF continues to prioritize aviation security, public safety, and community engagement through effective policing and operational readiness.
