DPP appoints 16 new RSIPF prosecutors following successful training

A total of sixteen officers of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) were appointed as prosecutors by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Andrew Kelesi after they successfully completed their training in Honiara on Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

The officers completed the Prosecution Qualifying Course over six weeks in September and October 2025 at the Rove Police Headquarters.

Following the classroom training, officers were attached to the Police Prosecutions Department (PPD) for six months to complete the practical component of their learning.

During this period, officers were required to complete a workbook to ensure that their training covered all aspects of prosecutorial work.

In congratulating the newly appointed prosecutors, Deputy Commissioner Simpson Pogeva in his remarks said, “The appointment of these new prosecutors strengthens the RSIPF and our ability to deliver justice to the people of Solomon Islands. As prosecutors, you will play a vital role in the criminal justice system.”

In his appointment address, DPP Kelesi stated, “As Director of Public Prosecutions, I appoint you under the powers conferred upon me by the Criminal Procedure Code to act as Police Prosecutors.

This appointment is both a privilege and a responsibility. As prosecutors, your duty is not simply to secure convictions. Your duty is to serve justice. You must act independently, fairly and impartially, ensuring that every prosecution is conducted according to the law and in the public interest.”

Seven of the appointed officers are female. One of the newly appointed female prosecutors described the training as both intriguing and challenging.

She said the prosecution officers, together with the staff at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), ensured that all practical lessons were delivered effectively and completed within the training period.

Director of PPD, Chief Superintendent Rodney Wheatney, said, "Today we are recognising the hard work, commitment, and determination that each of you has shown in reaching this far.”

"Throughout the Prosecutor Qualifying Course and the practical legal training, you have developed the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to undertake the important role of a prosecutor,” said Director PPD Mr Wheatney.

Chief Superintendent Wheatney congratulated all the newly appointed prosecutors on their achievement.

"We are proud to welcome you into the prosecution service and look forward to supporting your continued professional development," he said.

Chief Superintendent Whitney also acknowledged the Australian Solomon Islands Program Support for its valuable assistance in delivering the training as part of the capacity development of officers.
