Drunk suspect threatens CPC members with fishing spear gun in MOI
Auki police have arrested a drunk suspect for threatening and chasing Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) members with a fishing spear gun in the Malaita Outer Islands (MOI) recently.
The arrest was made after police conducted an operation on July 17, 2026, at the request of the Luaniua community in the MOI.
It was alleged that the suspect reportedly consumed alcohol in the village and, when requested to stop by local CPC members, he threatened and chased them using a fishing spear gun.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Malaita Province, Superintendent Michael Ramosaea said the suspect has been charged for the offence of intimidation, contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code.
“The suspect appeared before the Auki Magistrates' Court on 29 July 2026, where he was convicted and sentenced to seven months' imprisonment,” said Superintendent Ramosaea.
PPC Ramosaea thanked the outstanding bravery of our CPC members and traditional chiefs across both Luaniua and Pelau Island for the support rendered to the police officers during the operation.
“CPC and community leaders continue to step up, strictly enforcing their local by-laws and customary laws to maintain peace and prevent antisocial issues in their communities," said Mr Romosaea.
The RSIPF reminds remote communities to continue working closely with their local CPCs and report any unwanted activities.
