Police conduct crime prevention awareness talks at Lilisiana village

The Auki community policing team successfully conducted a crime prevention awareness campaign at Lilisiana Village in the Auki-Langalanga Constituency recently.

The awareness programme was conducted following information received by police from Lilisiana community leaders regarding an increase in the number of young people engaging in unwanted activities.

During the awareness programme, the community policing team delivered strong messages focusing on the dangers of illegal drug abuse, the legal penalties associated with brewing kwaso (homebrew), drunk-disorderly behaviour, and the harmful use of abusive language that disrespects community leaders.

Police officers stressed that societal problems can only be effectively addressed when parents take full responsibility for their family by providing proper guidance.

A mother spoke out openly during the awareness programme, stating that several parents are ignorant and negligent.

She is pointing out that some parents spend time gambling and completely abandon their duties as parents to nurse their children.

During the awareness programme, community leaders requested the immediate assistance of the police to review and update their community by-laws, as well as to establish a dedicated Crime Prevention Committee (CPC) that would work with them to enforce these laws in their communities.

Supervising Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Malaita Province Superintendent Michael Ramosaea thanked the community leaders for coming forward with their concerns and seeking police assistance.

PPC Ramosaea strongly appeals to all parents and community leaders across Malaita to work together and assist police.

“Together, we must combat the increasing antisocial issues and dangerous substance abuse affecting our young people,” said Superintendent Ramosaea.

The community crime prevention initiative is an ongoing operational strategy, with upcoming rollouts planned for major communities within the Auki township boundaries and communities in Malaita Province.
