The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) through the Community Policing & National Family Violence Unit staged ORANGE DAY on Tuesday, 25th August 2015.The launch started at Honiara City Council compound and ended at Poha community. Further out within our provinces, ORANGE DAY campaign was also staged at Auki, Gizo, Kira Kira and Tingoa.ORANGE DAY falls on the 25th of each month. The day is sanctioned as an international day to campaign and eliminate violence against women by the United Nations. It is part of a key strategy by the United Nations Secretary-General’s “Unite to End Violence against Women” campaign around the globe. It is supported by UN Women, UN Volunteers and stakeholders. The event is geared toward continuous efforts to highlight the many sufferings endured by women as a result of family violence and at the same time to reduce incidences and all forms of family violence across the world.At home, the key message of each day celebrated was keeping our homes safe and free from violence for a better Solomon Islands.“The Family Violence Unit in particular, hoped this month’s campaign staged on Tuesday, 25th August 2015 to be special and indeed, so special and moving it was! We would like to thank members of the communities that the ORANGE DAY team visited; the general public in and around Honiara that willingly came and rendered support and were brave enough to wear ORANGE”, said the National Coordinator-RSIPF’s Family Violence Unit Constable Daisy Kariamae.“The 25th of August’s ORANGE DAY program covered vital issues such as our community’s responsibility and duties in identifying and addressing as well as mitigating all forms of violence - be it within our own individual families, the neighbourhood and the public at large”, said Constable Kariamae.“Not only that, but ORANGE DAY is an opportunity to make a strong and visible public statement and bring to the forefront of public opinion that our women, girls and children are at risk of experiencing violent conduct from their love ones than ever before”, said Constable Kariamae.“Of particular importance is all forms of family violence and its dangerous effects on families, communities and the country as a whole. All forms of family violence is endemic in Solomon Islands as regrettably revealed through a conducted research study. And it is time that all citizens in the country take accountable measures in eliminating such a horrible and degrading attitude from our homes”, said Constable Kariamae.“We would like to warm heartedly reach out to our families as the backbone of society. The appeal is for all of us to use future ORANGE DAY campaigns to raise awareness about this global pandemic of violence against women, girls and children. It is RSIPF’s hope that together, all of us working in partnership will be able to bring about practical and innovative solutions”, she further stressed.The fight against family violence is not only a challenge, but a contest that will be a continuous campaign via community partnership with RSIPF’s Community Policing Department through the Family Violence Unit.“We at the RSIPF will continue to work closely together and support UN and other international agencies such as AusAid, NZAid, NGO’s and RAMSI in this vital campaign which the environment is one of urgent global imperative: where men and women have equal rights, societies prosper such that equality for women and what they represent is progress for all”, quoted Constable Kariamae.“I would like to share this opportunity with our police officers out in the provinces who have taken time and dedicated themselves that the ORANGE DAY campaign is celebrated as part of the continuous combined effort to reduce family violence. This is an important objective of RSIPF’s ongoing campaign on family violence. The campaign will not be restricted to Honiara but all our provincial capitals and rural communities as well”, said Constable Kariamae.
